I got an email from an NBA Hall-of-Famer…or did I?

tommyceltics5The practice of changing the ‘From’ name is not uncommon, especially in professional sports. Sending emails from professional athletes usually becomes popular around playoff time or any drives designed to sell tickets. Of course, the athlete in mind isn’t sending the actual email and has no role in writing the accompanying copy, but it’s a kitchy thing marketers do.

Comcast Sports New England sent out an email last week, previewing some Celtics games coming up along with some additional programming and promos on the station. The email was shown as coming from ‘Tommy Heinsohn’ (fans@comcast.net), the Celtics Hall-of-Famer and broadcaster that is known for his fiery way of letting officials know what he thinks of them, along with other unique characteristics.

The only issue is that the creative on the email has nothing to do with Heinsohn. There’s no mention of him, no section, no nothing. It’s odd to me: why send out an email from him if you don’t plan on capitalizing on it or referring to it, why do it?
