So there I was: just attempting to pick up a package of peanuts and a Diet Coke but with no cash. Unfortunately, the debit card threshold was $5 so I needed to grab something else and as I usually do in theses situations, I drifted over to the magazine rack to see if anything grabbed my fancy. One publication that stood out was the monstrously thick Inc. Magazine, anointed as the ‘handbook of the American Entrepreneur’. Glaring at me was the number 500, as in their annual listing of the top 500 privately-held companies to look at. The price was right, so what the hell…I picked it up.
While I’m still sifting through this monolith, I took note of a few familiar names on the Advertising and Marketing category.
- iContact (No. 85 overall): With a three-year growth of 2,114.3% and revenues of $6.6 million, the 78-person company found themselves on the list for the first time. Their description? They help ’small businesses manage e-mail contact lists and send newsletters’.
-Emma (No. 312 overall): Three-year growth of 902.2%, 50 employees and $5 million in revenue…described as selling ’software that allows customers to manage their email marketing online.’
Congrats to both iContact and Emma. Next year, let’s see if the industry can push itself to get a few more companies on the list!
