WAKA has large numbers of lists and wants you to know it

August 6, 2008 · 2 Comments

At some point over the past few years, I signed for the WAKA (World Adult Kickball Association) email list for some reason. This was when kickball began becoming big again for late 20s/early 30s kids and leagues were forming like crazy. I played on a team that just won our league’s title, so it can be thrilling…in a very dorky way.

Anyhoo, I have tried unsuccessfully to unsubscribe from WAKA’s list time after time after time. I haven’t gone the extra mile of contacting them directly with these ridiculous procedures as it’s almost become a game to me to finally get off the list. However, I think I finally figured out why: they have large numbers of lists.

WAKA has some large lists...and problems when you unsubscribe from them.

Here’s a screen shot of what happened after I tried to unsubscribe again today. It took several minutes to process my request, which I found baffling. But, however, it’s because they have large lists. Never mind that major retailers across the world offer one-click unsubscribes from their lists of millions and millions of people. Never mind that when you unsubscribe from a list, you should actually be unsubscribed. They maintain large lists, so it’s to be excused.

I’ll look forward to getting your email next month, WAKA.

How about the fact that requiring a login to unsubscribe is now *illegal* under the new CAN-SPAM regs….?

It’s a very confusing site. I’m not surprised as sometimes these organizations start out small, grow bigger than expected and the best practices we push get left behind.

There’s another much larger organization out there that is doing email marketing that is also violating this…more on this group in the next few weeks.

    Cue intrigue music!
